Prophetic Revelation: Networking the Nations

Word for the Month: June 2018

The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles, and they go down into the inmost body. Prov18:8

…………wandering about from house to house, and not only idle but also gossips and busybodies, saying things they should not. 1Tim 5:13b

For as long as there have been people who delight in hearing of others bad fortune and indiscretions , there have been those who have delighted in telling with malicious intent. With increasing literacy and the invention of the printing press, came a greater dissemination of information. Gossip persisted for longer; and the fourth estate came into existence.

He winks his eye to devise perverse things; He purses his lips and brings about evil. Prov16:30

He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets; Prov20:19

The world is filled with gossip. Last century a whole industry grew up within the fourth estate, dedicated to spreading gossip about celebrities and those in the public eye. Later this segment became more intrusive prying into people’s lives, and using illegal methods when looking for scandal and anything that would sell their publications.

Whoever hides hatred has lying lips and whoever spreads slander is a fool, in the multitude of words sin is not lacking. Prov10: 18-19

A false witness will not go unpunished. And he who speaks lies will not escape. Prov19:5

The creation of the World Wide Web and easy access to the internet for most people in the developed world has enabled the massive growth in social media. It has now become a behemoth that is proving impossible to tame. There are no limits to how far gossip can travel, and its perpetrators are able to hide from man (But not from God) behind faceless anonymity. We have now reached the stage where it is difficult to determine what is true and what is false. Misinformation and fake news is often more prominent than The Truth.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue. And those who love it will eat its fruit. Prov18:21

Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord. But those who deal truthfully are his delight. Prov12:22

The Hypocrite with his mouth destroys his neighbour but through knowledge the righteous will be delivered. Prov11:19

The Church is not immune from this modern trend. Gossip within the church is a cancer that can spread like wildfire. It can ruin reputations and destroy lives regardless of the truth. It can tarnish the Church in the eyes of the world and be an obstacle to evangelism. If allowed to continue; it could lead to the breakup of congregations. Therefore Leaders need to act swiftly to stop gossip in their church before it spreads.

A prudent man conceals knowledge. But the heart of fools proclaim foolishness. Prov12:23

A talebearer reveals secrets, but he who is of a faithful spirit conceals a matter. Prov11:13

Pastors, Councillors, and Intercessors, by the very nature of their role, are often privy to confidential information. This will often be the sort of information that gossips would love to have to enable them to cause mischief as they ply their evil trade.

That you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your hands, as we commanded you. 1Th4:11

It is unfortunately true that not everyone wanting to serve in one of these roles is suitable. They may not be good at keeping confidences. A malicious gossip might try to obtain one of these roles. Sometimes it can be difficult to not accidentally reveal a confidence, but anyone serving in one of these roles must be permanently on their guard and completely trustworthy.

Intercessors can be called on to pray for specific confidential situations. They must not pass information on to other intercessors unless they are led by the spirit and then only with the agreement of the first party. All information in such a case has to be on a need to know basis.

A perverse man sows strife. And a whisperer separates the best of friends. Prov16:28

Where there is no wood the fire goes out; And where there is no talebearer, strife ceases. Prov26:20

The book of proverbs contains a lot of wisdom that we ignore at our cost. It is just as relevant today as when it was written.
