The Shekinah Legacy was established in 2009 in recognition of the deep debt owed by Christians to the Jewish people.
In September 1997, the God of Israel spoke audibly to Valerie Smith, when she reluctantly accompanied her husband Nevill on a visit to Israel. They were staying in Jerusalem. It is the only time, Nevill recalls, when this has happened. God called her three times. She responded: “Yes Lord, here I am.” God then said: “I am calling him [Nevill] to Israel and the Jewish people…stand by your man.”
Nevill’s almost immediate response was: “What can we do? We are nobody in particular. We have no particular ability or anything like that.” He thought – “respectfully” – that God had made a big mistake.
As time passed, that calling persisted and they both stepped ‘out of the boat and on to the water’, hoping not to sink. Slowly, but surely, something began to come together…with the support and prayer backing of many other people.
Over the years they have been involved in many opportunities to bring help and support to needy Jewish people in Israel, and also in the nations of the Former Soviet Union. Then in 2009, they founded The Shekinah Legacy Trust, with the aim of bringing many of these “threads” together under one banner.
Sadly, after a short illness, Val went home to be with the Lord in late 2016. But with the help and support of many local friends, Nev continues this work. All of this flows from a heartfelt desire to put thankfulness into action…to practically demonstrate gratitude for a debt of love and honour that is owed – by Christians in particular – to the Jewish people.
It is taking hold of the solemn words of the God of Israel, spoken to the Patriarch Abram, as recorded in Genesis 12:1-3: ‘The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”’
